Q: Is bullying prevention a focus for the Highmark Foundation?

A:  Yes. Bullying Prevention is one of the five key areas under Highmark Healthy High 5, a 100-million dollar initiative of the Highmark Foundation. Visit the Highmark Healthy High 5 section of this site to learn more.


Q: How can I find out if my child’s school participates in a bullying prevention program?

A: Many schools throughout Pennsylvania are engaged in the OBPP. View a list of Pennsylvania schools participating in the PA CARES program or the HALT! - A Bullying Prevention Program to see if your district is one of them.


Q: What should parents expect if their child’s school participates in the OBPP?

A: Talk to your school principal about the expected, positive impact the OBPP will make in your school. Specific parent resources are in development, including a program newsletter.


Q: I have heard about several events coordinated for school personnel. Are you planning any events for parents?

A: This fall, the Bullying Prevention Institute will be providing exciting opportunities in which parents can participate. Please check back in late October for more details.

Q: Can I receive continuing education credits for attending Institute events?

A: CE credits are available to professional attendees of Institute events. The number of available credit hours and professional accreditation vary by event. View the Upcoming Events page to learn more.


Q: I attended the Bullying Prevention Institute two-day summit Hershey [October 2007], what is the next step for me as a concerned educator?

A: Throughout the coming school year several sessions are being planned for continuing professional development for school personnel. Please check the Upcoming Events page to learn about topics of interest and session locations. If your school or district is interested in adopting the OBPP or would like more information about the program, please contact Mary Dolan at the Center for Safe Schools.


Q: Some key people from our school district missed the last event. Is there a crash course or tutorial they can access to catch up?

A: Continuing Bullying Prevention 101 sessions will be scheduled through the Bullying Prevention Institute. Visit the Upcoming Events page to learn when and where these sessions are scheduled. Please also turn to the Events Archive that includes the agenda, speakers bios, presentation content and handouts from past events.


Q: Are there funding or other resources available to our school district to implement a bullying prevention program?

A: Schools interested in adopting the OBPP must do so through the Center for Safe Schools. Learn about eligibility and complete an application on line by visiting www.safeschools.info. Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grants are available to support school-based bullying prevention initiatives other than OBPP. Q: If the Bullying Prevention Institute is a Pennsylvania-based initiative, why is Clemson University coordinating the training?

A: The Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life at Clemson University is the home of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in the United States—the official program of the Bullying Prevention Institute and the only program recognized as a Blueprints program in bullying prevention.


Q: How can I become an Olweus Bullying Prevention Program trainer?

A: Contact the Center for Safe Schools at www.safeschools.info to complete an application to participate in the next available training session. A training schedule can also be found on the Upcoming Events page.
